Physical Activity Branch

The overarching aim of the Sports & Physical Activity Branch of the Trauma Informed Network is to create a trauma-informed sport and physical activity sector in Plymouth — a sector that is knowledgeable in how trauma might show up in sport and physical activity settings, and compassionate in its response.

“trauma is a wordless story our body tells itself about what is safe and what is a threat.”

– Resmaa Menakem, My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Mending of Our Bodies and Hearts

Building Awareness and Compassion in Physical Activity

The branch aims to provide training to increase providers’ awareness and understanding of trauma, enabling them to recognise and respond to trauma symptoms effectively.

We will offer continuous professional development opportunities, establish robust support systems, and promote reflective practice to help providers navigate challenges and enhance their effectiveness in working with trauma-affected individuals. Through these initiatives, the network aims to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all members.

Branch Lead: Hayley Knight

Hi, I’m Hayley! I’ve called Plymouth home for the past nine years and absolutely love being part of the Plymouth community. It feels like a village in a city. You can often find me strolling along the beautiful coastline with my two dogs, Izzy and Jackson.

Becoming active was life changing for me, and it inspired me to help others do the same. I’m excited to co-steer the Sports and Physical Activity branch of the Plymouth Trauma Informed Network and through it, I’m hoping to co-create supportive spaces for reflection, collaboration, and growth. Really looking forward to connecting with you at meetings!

Branch Lead: Larissa Milden

Hi, I’m Larissa, and I’m a branch lead for the Plymouth Mental Health Collective, as well as supporting the work of the Physical Activity Branch. I’ve spent nearly 20 years working in the voluntary and community sector, always with a focus on supporting people and communities to improve their health and wellbeing.

I’m passionate about creating spaces where people feel heard and valued — and I believe in the power of community-led change. When I’m not working, you’ll probably find me sea swimming, road-tripping in my camper van, or soaking up the music at a gig or festival!

Join our movement for change

Our ambition is for Plymouth to be a trauma-informed city. Our independent network is open to anyone connected with Plymouth with a desire to learn about and promote trauma informed ways of being. You too can join our Network and help Plymouth become a safer and kinder place, where the impact of trauma and adversity is both recognised and responded to with sensitivity and compassion.
